DRAFT Proposal

Proposal

What are the objectives of the production?

The objective of this show is to provide a fun-filled Halloween special of the popular show "Saturday Night In". The show will combine the popular theme in a family-friendly way. The presenters and audience will have the opportunity to compete in games. The show will be appropriate for all audiences as it will have no swearing and no games which could be classed for older audiences. This approach will be broadcasted on social media so people know the show will be safe for the younger audience. Social media will be used throughout the show with the continued hashtag #SNI and for this episode #SNIHalloweenSpecial, this will allow people to participate in the conversation on social media and this will also be used for entry to our free competition. The show will also have a music performance from an artist with new music released at the time of recording. The game show will include three games which will include "Apple Bobbin," "Guess the gruesome body part," and "Pumpkin Carving," We hope this special episode will inspire the audience to try these games themselves at home and send pictures in throughout the show. We feel that having the Halloween Special will encourage a wider audience to watch the show and be engaged, we also think the audience may be encouraged to get into groups of a couple of families to watch the show together.

Synopsis

Saturday Night In: The Halloween Special, bring the whole family together for an hour of games, entertainment, and competition. Join the presenters and audience as they compete in traditional Halloween games to win prizes. Tune in to hear Ariana Grande exclusively performing a song from her new Album Sweetener.

Duration

The show will continue to be aired on ITV 1 at 7:30 pm. The show will last an hour and will include 3 ad breaks. This follows the shows usual pattern and the pattern that most shows on the same channel use too. The hour length is a good length especially for those with short attention spans.

Title

Saturday Night In: The Halloween Special - The show will be called the same as usual with the extra Halloween Special words, this is because our audience who watch regularly will know to tune in any way. The show is called "Saturday Night In" as the idea is families can sit down together each Saturday and watch TV together, it's important that this happens as these days families don't spend much time together.

How many presenters will you have and how will they be used?

The show will be presented by 2 people, ideally one male and one female. The presenters will need to be good at making the show flow well to do this they will need good charisma. The presenters will need a good dynamic so they will be able to bounce ideas and jokes off of each other. They will need to be able to make the audience and viewers laugh and keep them entertained for the hour. If the presenters are dull the audience will get bored and switch over to another channel. The show will be scripted but will be as informal as possible.

What research have you done and how has it helped the planning of the production?

For this show we conducted a survey amongst people aged around 30-55+, to ask them questions about their lifestyles and viewing habits. We found that there was a 50/50 split between people who plan to watch shows and people who just switch the TV on, and interestingly there was the same 50/50 split to those who watch TV on demand and those who watch TV live. This shows us that when we promote this special show we will need to promote it across lots of different forms of press and show adverts on the ITV hub. We found the audience is very mature and will have settled down and had children who have grown up, these people will have higher paid jobs and have disposable income. The survey also showed us that some people in the target audience read the newspaper, so this shows us that we would need to advertise in the newspaper.

What is the format of the production?

The show will follow a typical Game Show format. The show will have several mini-games which the audience and presenters will take part in. Sound effects and screen graphics will be added for extra production value. The presenters will use a script to guide the show but will also add their own twist to the show. The show will promote a family game show and encourage those at home to join in.

Where does your project fit in terms of scheduling?

The show will continue on ITV 1 at 7:30 pm. Our main competitor will be Strictly Come Dancing which will overlap but around 30 minutes, which could cause a dip in viewers but we feel our loyal viewers will pick our show over this. As the show is a Halloween special we could look at changing the time so we don't clash with this show.

What will you include in your production?

The show will go as follows:

00:00:00 Introduction, welcome to the show and game 1

00:10:00 Adbreak

00:15:00 Second game

00:35:00 Ad break

00:40:00 Third game

00:50:00 Advert break

00:55:00 Music Performance & Close

01:00:00 End

Outline your Target Audiences?

Our target audiences will be the following:

  1. Primary: 40 - 55, settled couples with older children C1 or C2, more females non-ethnic specific, F Suburban Stability F23 Family Ties

  2. Secondary: 25 - 35, younger couples who are beginning to settle down, more females non-ethnic specific, H Aspiring Homemakers either H30 Primary Ambitions or H31 Affordable Fringe

  3. Tertiary: Teenagers aged 12-18, non-gender or ethnic specific

What modes of address will you use?

We will use three modes of address within this episode. The first will be the presenters talking to each other which will be indirect, as we want this to be as informal as possible, and will create a nice and smooth flow throughout the production. The second will be the two presenters to cameras individually, this will be direct and will be a little more formal. This will be used for direct messages which would be anything from game rules to reading terms and conditions. The third will be the two presenters with members of the audience, this will be indirect and will be as informal as possible. Segments like this will be where the presenter's personalities can shine through the most.

What are your technical requirements?

We will require 3 cameras to shoot this TV show. We will use the standard 2 close-ups and one wide shot for this production. The cameras will need to move around quickly as we will need a shot of the audience and closeups on the audience members who are picked to be in the show. We could have a 4th camera maybe for filming the audience shots. Lighting will be used to evenly light the sets, we need to make sure that the Halloween and dark aspect isn't removed with the lights being too bright. The audience will need to be lit too for when the presenters pick on the audience. A gallery will need to be fully working with the producer, director, vision mixer and sound mixer, comms will need to be used for direct communication for those on the floor. Each presenter, audience members in the show and music performer will need microphones so we can capture all of the audio.

What are your set design considerations?

For the set, we will have all of the usual Saturday Night In branding up as usual. We will also have other Halloween decorations including cobwebs, pumpkins, ghosts, and dark green and orange lights. These will create a dark and spooky atmosphere which will add to the Halloween special.

Do you require any props or costumes?

The presenters will be dressed in Halloween outfits. These can be sourced online or from local shops. We will also need apples for the apple bobbin, these can be sourced from a local supermarket. We need to get pumpkins which will be carved as one of the games, we can get these from a shop - we will need extra as they will be needed for the rehearsals.

What are your cast and crew requirements?

For this production, the cast and crew will consist of two presenters, a live studio audience of around 15-20 people, the full camera crew, producer, director, vision mixer, runner, sound mixer, health & safety.

What is your budget?

JVC Pro HD GY/HM890v £5000 x 3 = £15,000

Vision Mixer £300 x 4 = £1,200

Director £500 x 10 = £5,000

Producer £500 x 10 = £5,000

Camera Operators £100 x 4 x 3 = £1,200

Runner £50 x 10 = £2,400

Sound Crew £75 x 4 = £300

= £40,600

Pitch Discussion

Pitch

Today we presented our pitch to the class. We didn't rehearse as much as we did for previous pitches which I think you could sort of see. The slides were very full and I think our performance was pretty good. For this pitch, I didn't have a handout which made me say um a bit but I think it looks better for the audience. From the pitch the feedback said we should change the following; the name "Saturday Night In" is too generic and we should change it to something else, since then we have had ideas which include Head to Head or Game Chasers. They would then be followed by "The Halloween Special". They said the idea was pretty clear. They said that we should script the twitter posts that the presenters will read out as it will mean that the show will feel a lot more real and that they haven't been made up on the spot. We should also maybe consider swapping our primary and secondary target audience as the content in our show would be better to target the audience aged 35-45. We have now decided that the show should be called "Head to Head". Props/Costumes are key for this production to run well and smoothly, we will require the whole crew to join in and work together to ensure production runs smoothly. To improve my pitches in the future I should make sure I rehearse them to they run smoother.

Lighting Plan

Today I created the lighting plan for the studio lights. These are the lights which are controlled by the Lighting and Sound Manager in the gallery. This has been placed in the studio on the notice board. Copies have also been created for the Lighting and Sound Manager and Assistant to use during and on the run-up to the live production. I made the lighting map on Photoshop.

Risk Assessment

For the past couple of days, I have been working on the risk assessment for the show. I used the previous one as a template then added the ones which would affect our show. The director and producer have read the risk assessment and the executive producers will now check the document to make sure they are happy with it.

Pre-Show Checklist

Today I created the pre-show checklist. This is what each member of the crew in the studio will follow before each time we go live. This has been printed in A3 and placed on the TV studio noticeboard. On the checklist, there is space for each crew member to tick each task for 5 technical rehearsals and for the live show. The floor manager is responsible for ensuring this happens, along with ensuring health and safety guidelines are followed during the production.
