Codes and Conventions:

Game Show:

The reason why game shows work so well is that they appeal to a wide ranged audience, of course, they are still targetted it's not as specific as some other shows, this is done by having contestants of all ages on the shows. The game shows are usually presented by well-known celebrities as this makes the show have traction as people watch for the celebrities. Game shows usually have huge prizes which give the average joe a chance to get something they would never normally be able to afford. In most game shows sound and lighting are used to create lots of tension which adds a lot more pressure on the contestants. The use of buzzers and loud sound effects creates a lot of added effect. Examples of shows like this include... The Cube, Who wants to be a millionaire, and The Chase.

News:

The News comes in several different "mini formats" these include, 24-hour news, 1,6,10 o'clock news, the minute segments played between TV programs or the breakfast news. The News shows a range of stories which would all appeal to different people, usually ending with a story which is more enlighting. The first story is always the top story. Most longer news breaks will also include a weather forecast. In the event of a breaking story such as a terror attack, all television programs can stop their running schedule and would switch to the news. The News usually has tight shots which only show the person talking as this creates a more serious schedule. The News often has people in to interview too.

Chat Show:

Chat shows are very popular amongst a big range of people as people watch the chat shows to see who is being interviewed. Chat shows are usually presented by a celebrity and they usually interview and possible play games with another celebrity who is trying to promote a new show or film. Topics are also discussed on the show and these can include pretty much anything. The content of the show is also likely depicted by who is being interviewed. Shows like the Jeremy Kyle show are slightly different from the usual talk show but this is different as Jeremy puts two people together who have an issue and tries to resolve it. Other talk shows include... Graham Norton Show, The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Magazine Show:

These shows come in so many different varieties and all have different target audiences but they almost do exactly the same thing. They all have a couple of interviews, a couple scenes shot elsewhere, a music performance and lots of other random content. Some magazine shows like This Morning is very targeted to stay at home mums and this is very clear through the segments of the show and the things they discuss. Sometimes celebrities will appear to talk about a new product but they won't usually have as much screentime as they would on a chat show. These shows include... This Morning, The One Show, and Good Morning Britain.

TV studios are usually large open rooms as they need to be easily adaptable to different circumstances. They are usually adapted old industrial buildings. The rooms need high ceilings because TV productions need lots of lights and having them hang in a studio with not much ceiling space would mean the studio would end up being very cramped.

When a Live TV production takes place there is two main room this is the studio itself and also the gallery. The studio is where the production is filmed, in the studio would be the cast, a floor manager, a few runners, an audience if needed, and camera operators. The idea is that as few people are in the TV studio as possible as this will mean when production is live it will run a lot more smoothly. In the gallery would sit the director, producer, vision mixer, sound mixer, lighting operator, and any other roles relevant to the production. Everyone in the production would have a headset which means they can hear what is being said by the director and producer, this means allows for quick communication between the crew. Bigger studio setups would have a green room and makeup rooms.

TV Guide Research...

7pm 10pm saturday.png
7am to 11am.png

From looking at the TV guide the most popular live shows are in the evening more so on Saturdays. As you can see from the guide to the left the live shows are staggered which means that one channel doesn't make people pick a show, the example in the picture is The X-Factor starts towards the end of Strictly Come Dancing. Although both of these shows have different target audiences. BBC don't have that many game shows on TV at the moment, the one they have in this picture is Pointless Celebrities which is aired earlier. Chat shows tend to be shown a lot later in the evenings. ITV tends to be the channel with the most either live or as-live shows. I have compared this to other weeks and the same pattern of staggered shows seems to follow all the time.

The TV guide shows that weekday mornings tend to be a lot of live shows. ITV tends to hog most of the viewing time with Good Morning Britain in the morning which targets people who are getting ready for work and then it shows This Morning which is shown later that targets stay at home Mum's.  BBC One shows the Breakfast news which runs from 6 until 9, and this targets older people. If we made a show for the morning time it would have to be a breakfast news show, otherwise, if the show was real it would not be able to gain any traction. Other as-live shows in the morning include Loose Women, The Jeremy Kyle Show, Lorraine.

3-5.png

In the afternoons between 3 and 5, they show three game shows. These are mostly as-live shows. If we were creating a game show this would be the sort of time it would be shown. Only very popular game shows are shown in the prime time slots.

Barb TV Statistics

As ITV looks like the best channel for a live or as-live show, I have decided to look at the viewing statistics for this channel. I was very surprised by the results...

Coronation Street is the most popular ITV aired show September 2017, October 2017, December 2017, January 2018, February 2018, March 2018, May 2018 and June 2018. This is because Coronation Street has aired for over 50 years and has a very loyal audience.

In November 2017 I'm a Celebrity had the full spotlight. As this show is only on for a short amount of time and is very popular amongst a younger and trending audience, it gains traction very easily. These shows have to make sure it is on top form as its only for four weeks each year.

In April 2018 Britain's Got Talent aired, this show is aired every Saturday evening and has a very strong viewership and appeal sot a big range of people. As this shows automatically has a lot of viewers they don't have to try and compete with anything else as people will just watch it.

The only other show in the last year to beat Coronation Street was The World Cup. Otherwise Coronation Street would have won. The World Cup would get the most amount of views whatever channel it is on as people would go to any channel to watch it.

For the show that we create this data shows me that having a little bit of a theme to do with Coronation Street would be a good idea or maybe if this was for real having an actor from the show in our show. And because Ant & Dec aren't presenting our show it is never gonna get the best ratings for ITV, all we can do is try to make a show which is different and stands out. The data shows me that if we make a game shown it should be shown during the day, possibly in the afternoon. A news show could be any usual news time. A magazine show would either be the evening or the morning but it depends which audience we are going to be targeting.

Production Meeting

From the production meeting, we decided the following: We will display our show on ITV as this seems to be the platform that is the most popular for a magazine/game show, especially the evening around 7 pm. Our show would likely be displayed on a Saturday evening. We want to create a show which is sort of like "Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway" but with more game show elements. We know that this show is done to a very high production value but we feel that with a lot of work we should be able to make it work on a much smaller set. Being on TV at this time of the evening will be very good for gaining a lot of audiences, this would primarily be families with slightly older children. The time of year that this show is on means it doesn't really have to compete with any other shows, especially because The Voice is shown on the same channel but later on in the evening.

Target Audience

As the show, we sort of want to replicate is "Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway" I decided to look at viewing statistics for the show. I looked at You Gov first but then moved straight away from that when I saw that it said the main view viewers of the show are Females aged 40-54, which I completely disagreed with. I know from watching that show that the main audience is younger people, although a lot of people from every age group who watch the show. From this information, I needed something to back me so I went on to the ITV website and found that they broadcasted the target audience themselves. This showed that the main target audience is Younger females. You can clearly see this from watching the show too.

Next, I looked at the target audience for ITV's biggest show, Coronation Street. The YouGov statistics for this were very different again so I went straight to the ITV website. This shows that the target audience is Broad Housewives with children.  A lot of older people do watch the show, these are people who have grown up with the show and still watch it because they are "loyal viewers". We could have an element in our show of something to do with this show as it may help our show gain traction.

I then looked at statistics for The One Show as this is the show which will run at the same time as our show. The YouGov statistics show that the target audience is Women aged 55+. However, I think this age range is very broad. The One Show appeals to a lot of people as the content is very broad. I think each episode would have a different audience as it would depend on which celebrities are in the show. The One Show is more of a show which you would switch over too rather than a show which you make sure you watch every day, however it would definitely have a lot of loyal viewers.

What does it all mean...

The people who watch all of these shows I have looked at are all different age groups. Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is one of the shows with the broadest range of people watching, the reason this show is like this because of Ant & Dec and also the show has a big range of content.

The findings suggest that if we go with the Saturday evening, ITV, 7 pm as this is one of the most popular times for viewing TV as a family. At this time people will put the TV on and just watch whatever show is on. For the group, this shows us that we need to make sure that our show doesn't collide with a popular show as everyone would just watch the show. If we did have to show our show at the same time as a popular show we would have to make sure we were appealing to a different target audience.

Based on our idea we now need to research our target audience to find out what they would want from a show, we need to think of ways we can make our show different from others. We need to research what the shows we want to borrow ideas from do and how they are really successful. â€‹

Format Research

Firstly, I'm looking at Saturday Night Takeaway itself. On the right shows a clip from the show and a popular segment called "win the ads," an audience member usually plays but in this episode Ant & Dec play for the audience. This is really for the fans but the segment is usually very popular and a good way for ITV to combine the adverts within the show. This show has a very large production scale with a lot of crew. The show has a lot of heavy lighting but darker backgrounds which represent the Saturday night element. The show involves a lot of segments which combine together to make entertainment for a family. The show consists of a lot of cameras as its a big production with a camera crane. Sound effects are used heavily in this show, especially for the game. This show is scripted by it is very informal and the reason this show works so well is because of the chemistry between Ant & Dec. This show lasts 1.5hours but has a lot of ad breaks. The show consists of a lot of celebrities and audience participants.

After this, I decided to look at This Morning as it's another really loved show and a magazine show. This show is presented by either Phill and Holly or Ruth and Eamonn. This show is targetted at mums with young children who would be at home during the day. However, the show does have a lot of viewers who watch clips through their YouTube channel which has just under a million subscribers. The show has a different celebrity or mildly famous guest each day. They also have segments where they get people on to debate about different topics and also health professionals to give facts on situations. They also have quizzes and games and they adapt to current news. The lighting is very bright which creates a happy and calm environment. Also, they have a chef on each day who cooks some food in the kitchen set. The show has 4 cameras and is very low key compared to other shows. The show runs for 2 hours, being ITV has multiple ad breaks. This show can have a lot of people on within the 2 hours especially if they have all of the above segments. The studio is not that large actually, this is because they have a few sets but no audience.

One of our competitors would be The One Show. Although this targets a slightly different audience to us it does have a lot of loyal viewers. The One Show runs in the evenings on BBC 1. This show targets middle-aged couple. Each day they have a different celebrity whom they interview, usually a celebrity with something to promote e.g: a new book, film, Tv show. Towards the end of the show, they have a mini-documentary where a presenter goes and answer a question or finds out information about a topic. This show is lit brightly. It has a larger production value than this morning including a small live audience. This show is 30 minutes, this shows it's definitely made for people with busy lives who don't have too much time to spare. This show usually has two presenters and one guest, sometimes two. Video clips are played throughout the show and sound effects are used as and when needed.

The Graham Norton show is another BBC Magazine Show. This show is very popular and again has different celebrities on it. Graham discusses the people, trends and news stories that interest him. The celebrities are usually quite different which makes the show enjoyable for a range of people and means that if you don't know one celebrity you may know another. The show has been running for a long time and people also watch the show for Graham Norton himself. The show has a large audience which participates in the show. Fairly large production scale with lots of cameras and a camera crane. The show is well lit with dark colors. Each episode is 45 - 50 minutes. Very informal possibly scripted for intros and outros for segments but flows very well especially with the humor from the panel and presenter. SOund effects are used as and when. Occasionally games are included in the show, different content depending on the panel for that episode.

Inform our own idea...
