Today I opened up all of the survey results in a spreadsheet and went through and analyzed the results. It took me quite a while as I had over 170 responses and therefore needed to make sure the results that I talked about were representative of all of the results. I used the premade Google Forms graphs for the quantitative answers and listed the main points from the qualitative questions. Now I need to analyze three clips from Edgar Wright movies to talk about in my video essay.
Inform our own idea...
The people who watch all of these shows I have looked at are all different age groups. Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is one of the shows with the broadest range of people watching, the reason this show is like this because of Ant & Dec and also the show has a big range of content.
The findings suggest that if we go with the Saturday evening, ITV, 7 pm as this is one of the most popular times for viewing TV as a family. At this time people will put the TV on and just watch whatever show is on. For the group, this shows us that we need to make sure that our show doesn't collide with a popular show as everyone would just watch the show. If we did have to show our show at the same time as a popular show we would have to make sure we were appealing to a different target audience.
Based on our idea we now need to research our target audience to find out what they would want from a show, we need to think of ways we can make our show different from others. We need to research what the shows we want to borrow ideas from do and how they are really successful.
Organising Footage

Diary - 04/12/17
Today, we started off by sorting all of our footage. I sorted mine by scene and then named each clip with what happened and if it was useable. Already I can see this is helpful because when I have been editing some clips in After Effects I can see which they are without having to watch the video. After this, I then started editing the video. I am editing the bulk in PremierePro and then using linked Sequences to edit clips with snow and green screen in after effects, this allows me to be able to change things in After Effects and they then change automatically in the final video. I have started adding in the first few scenes and will continue to add more. I spent a long time editing the first green screen scene as I wanted to make it perfect, after spending a while doing it I think it looks pretty good.

Peer Assessment: Evaluation
The first question my peers were asked when watching my video was regarding if the narrative was clear. The peer from my group said it was relatively clear and they both said the voiceover helps them understand what is happening in the advert. Based on this I haven’t been given anything to change but it shows me that the voiceover is clear and informative. Hopefully, this will be engaging and will keep people interested. I think because the voice over starts at the beginning when the video starts it grabs people straight away.
After this, they were asked if they could see any continuity issues. One person said, “none at all, looks to be flowing well, it is in chronological order.” The other said, “no everything looks great.” This shows me that the order is fine and doesn’t need to be changed.
Following this, they were asked about transitions and SFX and if they had been well selected. One person said “transitions are generally smooth and the fade from blacks and whites are well placed and done well. Snow is nice too” the other said, “I think it looks really good transitions look really smooth.” This shows me that they have noticed the transitions and they don’t think too many have been used. I don’t think I should any many or anymore as this may make it become cheesy.
Next, they were asked about the use of diagetic and non-diagetic sound. One said “There is no diagetic sound but there is a voice over and it is very good, maybe should be louder,” the other said “I don’t think the voiceover should be that deep because it sounds like a trailer.” From this I can see that I need to make the voice louder and the voice doesn’t have any effects on it, it is just done by someone with a deep voice. I could also add a woosh to the video when Santa appears.
After this, I asked about the range of shots used. The first person said “Some, but from what I see some are shaky and the actors look in to the camera,” the other said the same thing. So, I need to go back through the video and move the clips around, so no one looks at the camera at any point and make sure all the shaky clips get stabilised because it will make the video feel smoother and flow better.
As this project is about viral advertising it makes sense to ask if the would share the video. One said: “Yes I would, good music, very festive and promotes Febreze well.” And the other said, “Probably not the only reason I would is that its filmed in Luton.” I think I have gained the second answer because this person isn’t my target audience. I have found out that whether an advert is shared depends on so many things.
I then asked if the Febreze brand image is shown clearly. One person said, “At the start not really but it is clear from around 10 seconds which is good.” And the other said, “Yes, definitely.” After doing my research I think we share the brand image a lot more than some other popular Christmas adverts, some don’t show any products at all. I think it doesn’t matter that the product isn’t shown too much at the start because we want to grab them first before we flood with images of our product.
Afterwards, I asked about the colour correction. One said, “Have not really noticed any correction in colour, but it's not too dark or overexposed,” the other said “Yes, goes well. Quite Christmassy too.” I can tell a big difference in the colour of the original footage, I don’t want it to be too obvious otherwise it may make the footage look grainy.
Following this, I asked about the greenscreen. One said, “It was done well, but the scene picked wasn’t the greatest.” The other said, “I could kind of tell it was greenscreen.” I will go back to the greenscreen footage and try to see if I can refine it further to make it look a little better. Also, this is the only scene I had for this footage. Personally, I think it looks fine on the scene which it is on.
Then I asked about whether they thought the music complements the video well. They both said it did because it was a Christmas song and that’s all it needed to fit with a Christmas advert.
Finally, I asked it they thought it flowed well and they both said it did!
Diary - 06/12/17
Today I went through and made a couple changes based on what I found out yesterday. I made one of the shots a lot quicker and I also made another shot have sparkles appear when Santa comes in for the shot. After this, I went through and tried to refine a couple things. I also added some sound effects when Santa appears. After this, I then created a survey which I have sent out with the video to find out what people think about the video and if anyone have any changes.

Advert Feedback Survey: Evaluation
With my survey which I was using to find out what people thought of my Febreze advert to see if they had any ideas of anything I could change I started off by asking some easy but useful questions, the two I used were about Gender and age. My survey results were split equally between males and females but the age range was extremely varied.
After that, I asked them if they would share the survey online and why they said their answer. The results for this were split very evenly too. Those who said yes said because they found it funny and it was enjoyable to watch. Those who said no it was because they don’t normally share adverts.
One of the main questions I asked was if you could change two things what would they be, for this question I got a huge range of varied answers. The first two things were the length of the advert (I kind of wish they said how they would like it to be) but we decided this length because we wanted the advert to be short and snappy, the other thing that they said was the Santa outfit and we already had decided that the outfit wasn’t very good but we had no other option at the stage when we had found out that it wasn’t adequate. Someone said that when the tree appeared it should have been fully decorated, we had thought about this but we decided we weren’t going to do this because we filmed it in November and it would have taken too long and therefore we wouldn’t have had enough time. Someone said the #tag writing is unclear and should have a different colour, I will have a look at the colours of this and try to change it.
Next, I asked would the advert make people buy the product. Most people said they would because they found the advert funny and engaging.
Finally, I asked if they thought the advert was a good representation of a Christmas advert and why. One person said it didn’t because if it was a true Christmas advert we wouldn’t have featured the product, which is true, but I think on this occasion we were fair enough to do so because the product was used. Everyone else said it did because of the use of Christmas trees, Santa hats and music.
Diary - 11/12/17
Today I went through and looked at my survey responses and have used the information to help me see what the public think of my advert. A lot of what was suggested can't be changed now but if we were going to do this again it could be. I have decided I need to change the end text and just make sure everything is playing smoothly which I will do tomorrow. I think the survey got a varied range of responses because of the different people I asked to do it, for example, Facebook got older people do it, whereas snapchat got younger people to do it and although the younger audience aren't our target audience they will be the people who see the adverts.

Overall Evaluation
Introduction
When we were given this brief, I was intrigued about this because I have had absolutely no involvement with creating adverts in the past. As I didn’t know much to expect from this project I was focused on looking forward to one specific thing, of course I was looking forward to the practical weeks because filming is enjoyable. I was worried about what the advert would look like, and I’ll go in to detail some more about that in a bit. For the last project my team consisted of two people so for this project when there was five of us it meant the running of the whole project became a lot easier. One of our biggest problems is that there was five of us guys and we were making an advert which was focused towards female homeowners, this meant a lot of research was needed.
We changed our idea quite a few times… originally, we were making an advert which would be different uses of Febreze in the home but then we changed our mind and went with a Christmas advert. We did this because we thought it would be a lot more appealing to our audience and therefore would give the most exposure to Febreze.
Our idea was inspired from Febreze’s Christmas product which we thought would be funny to use to fill people with the Christmas spirit. Looking back at this now we took a big step out by making our Christmas advert include the product because pretty much every other advert doesn’t include the product and focuses on the story line.
Our pitch played a big part in finding out what other likeminded people thought about our ideas. We found out that our ideas for effects would take a lot of thinking through to make sure that they could be feasible. This showed us that we needed to go back through and make sure that some of the complex scenes would have a chance of being made. An example of this would be the town hall scene in which Santa appears, for this we got photos from the location and did a day of greenscreen footage test which allowed us to see how we were going to use the effects in editing and after doing this once it meant it was a lot easier to produce the final edits a lot quicker because we had an idea of what we were doing because we had tried out adding things like snow.
My initial aim for this we just to make an advert which I thought was good, I wanted to be proud of it. It needed to be short and snappy while at the same time promote the product and brand in an advertiser friendly way.
Research
For my viral advert research portfolio, I did some primary and some secondary research just, so I had a range of information. For my primary research my main focus was the brand. I wanted to find Febreze brand values, products, target market, competitors, brand image and controversies. I spent a long time finding out information online because I needed to make sure that the information I gathered was correct therefore allowing me to create the best advert that fit as a close as possible to something that would fit with Febreze. When I was researching Febreze online I came across their Facebook page and on there was a button which said send a message, so I decided to drop them a message with some information with what we were doing, and their reply was helpful. They confirmed that the research I had done on their target market was correct, having this information means that we were sure that what we were doing was correct. I noticed a few times with this research that answering one question would lead me on to another, this happened more frequently with the information about the brand and also some questions which we had during post production with things such as special green screen effects. For my primary research I did a survey because it is a good way of getting lots of people’s opinions on a lot of questions. I made sure that the survey was sent to a range of people especially some who were in my target audience because it is extra helpful. The answers proved helpful as they gave my insights in to things I hadn’t thought about regarding sharing online and the content of the advert.
To improve my research portfolio, I could have used another method within my primary research and I could have asked Febreze a few more questions and could have written it up like an interview, this would have allowed me to find out a lot more from themselves.
After now completing my final project I think I should have researched special effects more because when I was editing, although we had done some research, it was complicated to make sure all the elements worked together. For example, I hadn’t researched about using After Effects and Premiere Pro to have linking clips which once I found out how to do it became a lot easier to edit because I could change something in After Effects and it would update in my editing timeline. Also, I could have researched more about After Effects because when I was editing and suddenly decided I needed a dip to white it was more difficult to find than it is in Premiere Pro.
Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production
For this project I opted to be producer again because I felt that last time I did a good job at it and thought hopefully I could do the same for this task. This meant that I made sure that the project went from start to finish in a way which was smooth and at the same time productive. I think I’m good at this role because I am very organised which means it helps with organising the others to make sure they are working the most effectively and making sure that if they have filmed on their own that they are happy with how it went. Another skill I think I demonstrated was being a good team leader I think this because Cameron and I worked well ensuring that everything was thought through and therefore would work. For this task I enjoyed working on a project which was so much vaster than the previous, previously we had one scene this time we had multiple scenes and a tonne of effects to be adding in post. This meant that more planning was needed to ensure that our idea could be produced.
On set there were a few problems which we faced which we hadn’t thought about although, they were only small things they would have still made the video seem more professional. The first was the Santa costume which once we got hold of we have realised that is wasn’t as good quality which meant that it didn’t seem as real. The other issue was the tripod which we had been given, it didn’t have a smooth head because of an issue with the production assistant and the person who hires the equipment out and this couldn’t be changed, this was mostly okay because most of our shots were still but there were a few which didn’t look very good because of the tripod head.
I think our time management was really good because we made sure that we had planned what we would be doing each day and we made sure that we had left enough time for things to go wrong. In this case as everything went right it meant we were done early somedays which meant we had longer to look at the footage.
One of the days we went back out to re-film some of the shots we filmed on the first day because of issues with the Santa costume, but as we had finished the other scenes more quickly then we had expected it meant we had time to do this.
Product
I think the product does a good job of meeting my initial intentions. Earlier on I said I wanted to make something which was short, snappy and that I was proud of. The advert is decently quick because we designed all the shots to fit together in a way which would mean they would all flow. I am proud of what the team created, we started with an idea and had ideas that we knew could be difficult to create in to something real. I’m happy with the production quality and the final product I think it shows Febreze in a way that would be appealing to their target audience.
We decided that our target audience would be female homeowners. I think the advert has been made with an extremely broad audience, to make the advert more family friendly it could have included a bigger range of actors rather than the crew. I think someone would be persuaded to by the product because they would see the product and think it had been used in an interesting way.
To improve the advert, it should have had smoother transitions between scenes, as this would have made the video flow better, it should have also had more special effects around Santa maybe a glow would have complemented him well.
Throughout this whole project I have gained lots of knowledge around After Effects using special effects, Premiere Pro creating something shorter but adding a lot more detail and also with advertising as a topic, I learnt so much, everything from information at the ASA to knowledge about what adverts should include.
I think our video does a good job at following industry standards because we followed the guidelines to make sure that it would be friendly for all audiences.

Overall, I think the project was so much more successful because of the team behind it. All five of us had input which allowed us to create this idea. Although the team was lead by me and Cameron, we worked continuously as a group making sure that everyone was happy with decisions that were being made. This task has taught me that even starting with something completely knew that the correct expertise allowed our idea to become our final product.
