Today I opened up all of the survey results in a spreadsheet and went through and analyzed the results. It took me quite a while as I had over 170 responses and therefore needed to make sure the results that I talked about were representative of all of the results. I used the premade Google Forms graphs for the quantitative answers and listed the main points from the qualitative questions. Now I need to analyze three clips from Edgar Wright movies to talk about in my video essay.
Inform our own idea...
The people who watch all of these shows I have looked at are all different age groups. Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is one of the shows with the broadest range of people watching, the reason this show is like this because of Ant & Dec and also the show has a big range of content.
The findings suggest that if we go with the Saturday evening, ITV, 7 pm as this is one of the most popular times for viewing TV as a family. At this time people will put the TV on and just watch whatever show is on. For the group, this shows us that we need to make sure that our show doesn't collide with a popular show as everyone would just watch the show. If we did have to show our show at the same time as a popular show we would have to make sure we were appealing to a different target audience.
Based on our idea we now need to research our target audience to find out what they would want from a show, we need to think of ways we can make our show different from others. We need to research what the shows we want to borrow ideas from do and how they are really successful.
Diary - 13/11/17
Today we sat down as a group for quite a long time to work on our proposal, this took quite a while as we decided to change our idea as we didn't think our original idea would work. I don't think changing our idea at this time is a bad idea because most of the research I did was mainly focused on Febreze as a brand rather than an idea. The reason we went with the Christmas theme is that we think it will go viral more easily. After we did that we went through and created our own proposal with all the information.
Viral Advertising Proposal
Objectives of production
Our main objective with our advert is to hopefully create something which people will recognise with Febreze, it must have continuity to their other adverts, it needs to use the same colours and follow the same sort of theme while at the same time be something people watch and laugh at. The advert needs to be enjoyable to watch therefore it should be engaging and make a reason for people to share it.
The product
In the advert, we will be using Febreze Air as this is Febreze’s main product, we have decided to use this as we think it will fit our idea the best. The product will also be easier to advertise as it is known within the market already which means people will easily recognise it.
Research
We have looked at past adverts which showed us what Febreze usually do, I have learnt that their adverts normally are very simple but have funny aspects which is what makes them successful. Febreze adverts usually show dull scenes and dull music until the Febreze has been sprayed which then makes the scene bright and colourful. We are going to use #SprayTheJoy and we want people to share pictures of them using Febreze around the festive season or share comments on the advert, both of these will allow their friends to see it and then watch the advert which will make more people see it. We also want the advert to be direct and to the point, because we don’t want to waste peoples time and we want them to enjoy the advert.
Target Audience
Our primary audience is going to be Women aged 25-45, within this market, we are mainly targeting homeowners and mothers who have busy lives and need something quick, easy and affordable to use. Our secondary audience will be men aged 23-29 who are at home and want to quickly make their house smell nice.
Advertising Techniques
We will use an exaggerated claim because this could be the difference between someone buying the product and someone going with another brand. We also need to make the advert somewhat relatable as this will more likely get the viewers involved. We want to focus on making sure it is engaging because we need to keep the viewers engaged and when they get to the end they need to think I want to share that.
Viral Marketing Strategy
Our viral marketing strategy is all based on #SprayTheJoy. We decided to go with this tag because it conveniently uses the word spray which fits in well with Febreze and joy because the idea of the advert is that Santa spreads joy through spraying Febreze. We want people to share pictures of themselves using Febreze and comment using the tag on their social media sites, this will then show their friends who will hopefully watch the video and then share themselves, we think because the video is Christmas themed it gives more reason for it to be shared therefore gaining it more exposure.
Synopsis
This year the Christmas spirit isn’t spreading too well…this all changes when Santa comes along with the Febreze which brings the spirit to everyone. Santa sprays gardens and they light up. He sprays over a group of people and they start singing Christmas carols. The scent of the Febreze fills everyone with joy making sure they are ready for the special season.
Narrative Structure
After watching a lot of other adverts we have decided we don’t want the narrative to be loud and annoying because we don’t think that will be engaging. We want it to be formal but at the same time be engaging and soft, it will need to fit the rest of the video and music as this will make it flow a lot better. We want the voiceover to be indirect only mentioning the product once at the end.
Production Techniques
We will make the video pretty simple, we don’t want to use a green screen as we think our idea will be able to be done without actually having any special effects. One of our ideas is to have a Christmas tree with fibre bottles hanging from it. We will have very dull scenes until the Febreze is sprayed and the Christmas spirit had been sprayed. In the background we will have Christmas music playing which will be slow and speed up when the Febreze has been sprayed.
Distribution Methods
We will distribute our video through YouTube and other social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter on these sites we think a good time to share is between 4 and 6 pm on a Friday because this is a time when our target audience may be on social media. We could also show our advert on TV, if we did this a good time would be on a Sunday evening because most people would be at home at this time, this means it would be given optimum exposure.
Duration
To find an optimum time for our viral advert we looked to our surveys as these asked the people who watch adverts. Using this we decided we want our advert to be around 30 seconds, it's not too short and it's not too long. A 2-minute advert may be good in some situations but for this we want people to feel they can watch the whole thing and that they don’t have to skip.
Mode of Address
For this, we decided to make our video be indirect and more of a story as this will allow for a smoother and more engaging viral advert. When you look at examples of Christmas adverts online they barely use their products in the video which is why we think this should be indirect.
Contributors and Locations Required
Our actors will consist of the crew, our main character who will be dressed as Santa will be Konstantin. We won’t need any other characters so we can just use other members of the crew as there is five of us. One of the locations will be a house with Christmas lights. Another will be a house with a Christmas tree and also a street scene.
Props/Costumes
For the video we will need a Santa Costume for the main character, Santa hats, and Tinsel for people to wear after they have been given the Christmas spirit. We will also need a couple bottles of Febreze preferably with a Christmas scent.
Production Meeting

I decided to message Febreze through Facebook to see if they could give me any information. First of all, I just told them my idea which (as you can see) they thought was a good idea and gave me permission to use their logos and images. I then asked them about their target market which confirmed that what we had decided was correct.

Pitch

Mood Board
Diary - 14/11/17
Today, we had a production meeting to discuss our roles for this project. Cameron and are I going to be joint producers for this project because we feel that we want to try to use our input to try to make the idea become a reality. After this we came back to class and worked on our powerpoint, we used Google slides which meant everyone could work on it at the same time which allowed us to work really quickly.
Pitch Recording
Evaluation of Pitch
For our second pitch I think as a group we did a really good job at getting our idea across, the group was very confident which allowed for a very transparent look which engaged the audience throughout.
The first piece of feedback we received was regarding how Febreze in a shot will turn in to making something festive and how the final clip will look. We will use a range of camera angles to suggest the falling particles from the spray will be snow and then use overlaying effects to be snow. We will also do shots where the bottle covers the whole screen and then when its removed the new scene will have started.
Another piece of feedback we received was regarding the humour. In the pitch, we mentioned that we wanted the advert to be funny, we realised we should have removed this because since we have decided to go with our Christmas themed advert we haven't been looking into using humour because we feel that our target market is looking more for an advert which they can connect with rather than laughing at it, therefore, we think they would share a viral advert like this because they would share it because of the story.
Regarding idea, I think we just to make a few minor refinements next week to allow for smooth production. We will make these next week when we make the production paperwork. It's vital we do this because if our idea isn't made to run smoothly it won't be engaging to watch.
Our group discussed that some editing techniques which we may use to make the advert flow and seem like the Febreze is bringing the Christmas spirit. We also have said that we need to make sure our ideas need to all be made sure that they are able to be shot easily on the filming days e.g. permission has been collected from all of the locations, so we need to make sure this is all sorted out next week.
I think I did a good job at presenting, I felt confident with presenting to the class but nervous about what the class would think about our idea. Natalie said that I was very transparent and serious which meant whatever I said was believable.

To improve this whole thing I think more practice and more time spent on creating the slides would have been beneficial.

Script Feedback
Final
Script
Diary - 20/11/17
We wrote our script this morning which we got peer assessed, which allowed us to see how we could improve it. After this, we started working on the production paperwork, I worked on the production schedule which I need to finish tomorrow and helped Konstantin and Alin on the shot list.

Tomorrow I need to finish the production schedule and make the call sheet.
Producers Paperwork:
Diary - 21/11/17
Today, Cameron and I went out and took photos of the locations which we, were thinking of using. After this, I worked on finishing the Shooting Schedule. After this, I filled out call sheets for each day we are going to be filming on and gave them to the right people. Finally, I completed the location Recce document and uploaded all of them to the website.
Test Shots
For our test shots, we set up a green screen with a three-point lighting system. We experimented with a couple different ways of Santa coming into the shot, catching the Febreze and spraying it. After this, we looked at the footage on our computers using Adobe After Effects to remove the green screen and add things like snow. From this, I have learnt that we need the lights to be a little less bright as this will make the picture look better. Also, we need to make sure that we consider small details such as when the Febreze is thrown in to shot it looks as although that it suddenly appears because of the edge of the frame.
I think with the lights we should leave them in the same places because the scene was lit well and therefore was fairly easy to cut out. When I made this I had an issue where After Effects keeps giving me a RAM error and not allowing to continue with the project, this may be because I was working with a few scenes, which I would do separately in the final project, to solve this issue I may bring in my own computer.
Diary - 22/11/17
Today, we collected the equipment and then as a group we worked together to do a test shot of the green screen footage. It took us quite a few attempts but once we got everything sorted we were able to get some good footage. After this, we sorted the footage and individually edited it in After Effects this allowed us to get an idea of how we could use the actual footage, I also added snow which we will do in the actual advert because it creates a more wintery effect.
