Unit 13: Post-Production

Diary

01/04/19

Today begins the post-production stage of this project. As discussed in my previous diary I wasn't happy with how some of my pictures turned out so today I went back into the darkroom with the technician re-enlarge some of the photos with the hope they would turn out a bit better. The technician showed me on the enlarger how to increase the contrast with the in-built filters. He also showed me how to use a little eyepiece device to make sure that all of the images are in complete focus. In some places on the image mostly the sky was burnt out, this means that the enlarged image would just be white in that place as it wouldn't have enough time to develop. So I used paper to cover the rest of the image leaving more time for light to go on to the paper. After this, I continued developing the images on my own. I ended up using a 30-second exposure which compared to before when I used a 12-second exposure meant that the images came through a lot better. Tomorrow I will be digitizing these images.

Diary

02/04/19

This morning I came into college early to digitalize the enlarged images from yesterday. I had done about half before I realized that they were overexposed so I made sure to do them again as I had to make sure they were all very good. I am very happy with the final photographs, I am so glad I decided to re-enlarge the photos and I think it is definitely worth it. After all of the images had been added I went online and copied all of the text into Grammarly to spell and grammar checks it. I originally had the font size at 14pt but I

have decided to make the font size 12pt as this gives me a lot more room to add more information in my diaries especially feelings. I have printed the document and cut it to size to see what it will be like and I am very happy with the sizing. After this, I have sent the draft PDF to Michael from MWebbPhotography a local photographer whom I hope will give me a good insight and judgment to the technical side of the content. I will go over the draft tonight at home to check for any mistakes I find and hopefully have Michaels feedback tomorrow and then I can use this to get the final product sent to the printers on Thursday.

DRAFT Feedback

For the draft review of this project, I asked a local photographer called MWebbPhotography to have a look through DEVELOP to see what he thought from a technical perspective. I am very happy with his feedback as he went beyond answering my questions and went through it with a very fine tooth comb and I'm glad he did as he picked up on quite a few technical mistakes. Below are the bullet points of our meeting suggesting improvements...

  • Development Tank or Daylight Processing Tank, not Development Can

  • Powered zoom, not digital zoom

  • Opened a DSLR

  • Photography being around for 20 years actually started in 1975, Nikon first DSLR 1986

  • Say what film actually is

  • Pentax ME Super say what years it is in production and say whether it was designed for professional or amateur use

  • Page 9... elaborate and say that other cameras have a locking system so the back doesn't open

  • Page 9... information about exposures, say about using a smaller aperture because of too much light, shutter speed was at max

  • Page 11... Change the name of the diary to Photograms, the process of how the photo paper works

  • Page 11... Shinning on paper, should be exposing light to paper

  • Page 11... Health and safety gloves

  • More obvious between a guide and a diary layout

  • Page 13... Say "DO NOT EXPOSE THE FILM TO THE RED LIGHT"

  • Development bag should be changing bag, being double walled, bright sunlight, sleaves ensure light doesn't come in

  • Self-loading spiral, not reel

  • Collum, spiral, funnel, light proof, lid

  • Temperatures 20 degrees, -1 degree would take forever

  • Printing... burning in or masking areas, exposing an area with more light than other areas

  • Printing... Spending time burning in every single area of the image so each area is exposed correctly

  • Font size changing between the last page and previous pages - has been changed now

  • More developed images

At this point, I would normally decide which of the changes I would make to my final product, but as these are all technical changes I will be completing them all as ensuring the technical information is correct is essential for ensuring integrity for the product. I have completed all of the changes except for changing the diary name which I will do tomorrow. He suggested that I made it more clear between the diary and guide layout, but I want it to be merged as I feel it better shows a journey, so I won't be changing that, He did also say I should have included more of my developed images for the audience to enjoy, however, this is not possible as the photo book must be only 20 pages.

Diary

After having my draft checked through last night for punctuation and grammar issues, this morning I went through the book completing the changes. As I was going through I was also adding or removing sentences where I thought change was needed. As the library Mac's only had Adobe CS6 it meant that I was unable to open my InDesign project as this was made in Adobe InDesign 2019, this did mean that I was limited on the amount of work that I was able to get done, but meant I did focus more on the text than I would have done otherwise. After lunch, we were back in our normal classroom and I had a meeting with another tutor about a promo video I had done for another subject. After this, I met with Michael from MWebbPhotography to go through the technical side

of my project, he gave me lots of suggestions for improvement and I am very happy with the changes he suggested, they have now all mostly been actioned. This has caused for a bit of research for facts and information which were needed for the content, I have now created a new Bibliography (linked below) which contains the resources used for this.

Printing the Book

I have two options of places who are able to print my photo book. My first option is PHOTOBOX who is a very well known photo printing company whom I have used before their photobook starts at 34.99 for the small size. The other option is a company called Blurb whom I didn't know about before this project. They are more of a bigger print company and make professional prints for companies. Their photobook option starts at 9.99 for 18cm by 18cm which is the size I have made my book in InDesign. They also have a 41% discount code so I believe this is the best company for the price. The website says delivery is 7-10 working days, this is enough time for the book to arrive before the final deadline.

Log

Diary

04/04/19

Today was the final day for post-production. I came in early and got to work on going through the text document to check for mistakes. I was still finding sentences that needed re-wording. After doing this I read the book through twice firstly in word and then in InDesign when I had everything laid out. I was making sure no mistakes made it into the final design. Submitting it to the printers wasn't all plain sailing as I assumed a 20-page photobook would include the front and back cover, however, the site sees it as 20 pages of content so I had to add a blank page at the beginning and at the end which I will believe will still look okay. After this problem everything else was fine and I got the book sent off to the printers. I then worked on getting the e-book on Amazon. This process was fairly simple, I just had to install their proprietary software which converted my PDF to a format their site could understand, selected the price and added my information and it was live within 8 hours.

Today, I created a list of questions to gain feedback on my final product. The questions I ask focus more on the practical side of DEVELOP, things such as the detail level, understandability, design rather than technical as I know this has all been checked. I have sent it out two 5 photographers. I have sent it to one of the photographers who said they have no experience with developing film as it will be good to see if they understand the e-book. When I have the responses I will be able to get working on my evaluation.

Final Product Feedback - Photographers

For the final product feedback for this project, I got back in contact with the photographers I had spoken with at the start of this project, asking them to simply answer five questions. Three of them replied to me giving me answers which I am very happy with. Photographer1 is Rafe Abrook Photography, Photographer2 is PGWimaging. Photographer3 is Ian Scott Photography, Photographer4 is Dan Freeman.

1) Do you think the detail level is enough for an amateur?

Photographer1: I think the detail level is good

Photographer2: I think beginner photography enthusiasts may struggle and need to look up a lot of meanings to words

Photographer3: I feel as though more detail is needed as sometimes big processes can be brushed over quickly.

Photographer4: yes, I think it documents your journey from the perspective and position that you are currently in. You seem to have learned a lot in a relatively short amount of time, and this is reflected in the book.

2) Do you like the design choices? What would you change?

Photographer1: I would adapt the design to make the process more obvious and clear to the audience.

Photographer2: Yes, I like the simplistic layout of the book. Maybe a layout of pictures with text below the pictures may work better for the step by step layout.

Photographer3: I would change the font as sometimes punctuation is difficult to read

Photographer4: it would be handy to have the text accompanying the imagery directly, perhaps wrapped around it. this would make the content more relatable to the viewers of the book. this, in turn, will keep their interest better than a block of text. I would have also liked to have seen examples of your failed attempts. if you were to publish a book like this, as a guide, people would want to see failed attempts alongside the successful ones in order to see how/if the images they take might be fails also.

3) Do you think any of the content is too confusing?

Photographer1: I think sometimes it can be

Photographer2: Yes, in some cases, I would try to either outline the process or record your feelings, I think doing both makes it more difficult to see the steps.

Photographer3: Not really, but to someone with less knowledge it may be confusing

Photographer4: no, but then my background is film photography, so naturally I understood the text. again examples to accompany the text or diagrams might help the viewers.

4) Do you think the book has a market?

Photographer1: I think it would appeal to someone with a little bit of photography knowledge

Photographer2: Yes and no, I think it would to an audience with basic knowledge, not someone wanting to get into this professionally.

Photographer3: Yes I think there is an audience that would like to read something like this.

Photographer4: as it currently stands, I see this as more of an informal blog. the informal writing style is what would appeal to a lot of people. you come across as friendly and enthusiastic, and people like that in how-to guides. guide books tend to consist of much much more content. this is in no way an insult because you have only just started at the film side of things. again, as your book takes more of the format of a diary, I think a blog or web-based how-to for beginners would be a more suited home than a printed book.

5) Any other improvements?

Photographer1: Add more pictures that you took

Photographer2: We never see a picture of the Pentax, so add one of these

Photographer3: More detail about the development process

Photographer4: just keep working at processing more film. the more you shoot and process, the more you practice a variety of techniques in the darkroom, the stronger your library of images will become. when people look to a how-to guide, they will look at the photographic outcomes, so a substantial amount and a good variety are key.

From the above feedback I have highlighted in bold the comments which I feel are the most important, I will now discuss why I agree/disagree with their comments.

In response to the first question I asked "Do you think the detail level is enough for an amateur," the general consensus to this was that if you had some knowledge of photography it would be helpful and beginners would need to look up meanings to words. I definitely agree with this and it was suggested to me at the design stage to add text boxes with "tips" in them but I stayed away from this idea as I felt it would ruin the clean and simplistic look that I was aiming for. It was also suggested here that sometimes big processes were brushed over too quickly and more time should have been spent on these, I did already reduce the font size from 14pt to 12pt which gave me an extra 75 words per page but maybe if I had made a 40 page book it would have allowed me to focus on more detail. Another option would be to have focused on one part of the journey if I had made a 20 page book on purely just developing the negatives I could have gone into more information about the chemical reaction that takes place with the chemicals.

Secondly, I asked "Do you like the design choices? What would you change?" It was suggested that I make the process more obvious and clear to the audience, maybe I could have done this by having a grid view with text below each of the images or more of a step by step guide. One of the photographers suggested a block of text may not keep a viewers interest as well as smaller amounts of text maybe in paragraphs. It was also suggested that I include some of the failed prints so the audience would understand more clearly what went wrong, again this would be good however I think it could ruin the clean look.

I then asked do you think any of the content is too confusing, One of the responses to this was to either outline my feelings or the steps and that doing both makes it more difficult, I sort of agree with this I feel like I would have been able to add more detail if I wasn't recording my problems and thoughts. Although this does defeat the whole object of it being diary style. Another suggestion was that to someone else with less knowledge it could be confusing, to combat this maybe I could have included a glossary at the back. Again mentioned was examples to accompany the text or adding diagrams, this would have been good but more pages would have been necessary for this.

Next, I asked do you think the book has a market. The answers to this were very mixed with some saying yes and no, it would market for a group of people with some basic knowledge but not those wanting to get into this profession. Another said it may work better as an informal blog and that the informal writing style would appeal to a lot of people. I disagree with this because I think that people would buy it as an e-book, but I can see what he means about something like this being available for free on a blog.

Finally, I asked them if they had any other improvements that they could suggest. The first person suggested adding more pictures that I had taken, this had been suggested by the draft feedback I received too, I would do this if I had more pages. The second person said that we never see a picture of the camera I used so that would have been good, I definitely agree with this and not sure how it was missed. The third person suggested adding more detail about the development process, again I would do this if I had more room or was able to change the style to a complete guide.

Press Pack

I have decided that I will create a press pack to accompany my project screening. I have chosen to do a press pack as I believe it will be a good way of showing the audience all about my project.

So what is a press pack?

A press kit is an information package provided for members of the media to promote events, organizations, products or candidates. A press kit is also known as a media kit.

Capture.PNG

I remembered that for my year 1 FMP I used a Press Pack fro Keech so I decided to go back and look at that. I mainly looked at this one for design as the content for mine would be completely different. Instantly I know it is made by Keech as it includes all of their colors, fonts, and logos, this instantly makes the audience see the brand. They would then go and see the actual product in this case maybe their website and see the continued use of the same colors and fonts. This shows me that I need to ensure the same colors and fonts that were used in the Photobook are now used in the press pack. Lots of information where stats are placed is shown in big and bold letters so the audience is seeing what is important. Again this shows me that information that I want the audience drawn to I to need to make stand out.

The next press pack I decided to look at is one from H&M. This again is filled with big bright images which show off the "best bits". It gives the audience a chance to see what the brand is really about. Similar fonts are used across this whole press pack and the website inforcing the brand into the audience's mind. The larger text highlights detailed information that H&M want the user to understand. This press package is for new staff to read when they join the company it details everything about the product including information on staff benefits and shares within the company. This is what H&M show people so it has to be the best it can be and in the best and most professional way show off what H&M are and what H&M can do.

The third press pack that I decided to look at is the one for Center Parcs. I decided to look at this one because I know it will be filled with big pictures and the pictures here speak the words. I will need to do this with mine, in the photobook one of the complaints was that not enough of the developed images were shown, here I will be able to display my other pictures. As same as above the brand is carried throughout the whole press pack using the same font and colors. I will ensure I use the same font and colors as I did with my book. More so with this one, all of the pages are laid out in the same style and this gives a good flow to the book.

Today, I was at the hospital so I was only able to do a limited amount of work. I went through the PowerPoint and decided that the best method that I should use to present my project was to be through a press pack. I then looked online at different options for press packs. I looked at one I had used a while ago for a local charity, one for H&M the clothing brand and one for Center Parcs. I know these are varied but I wanted to see what different companies would include in their press packet - because my product is much of a niche I wouldn't be able to find a press pack for a photo book. I have found out that I need to make sure similar colors and the same fonts are the same as the photobook and need to make sure the press pack follows the clean and simplistic design. This product doesn't have a brand as such so the brand, in this case, is the other product and they need to link. Tomorrow morning I will create the press pack and in the afternoon I will make the pitch ready for the presentation on Thursday,

Diary

This morning began by completing my press pack for the pitch tomorrow. I opened up a new document in InDesign and then started copying assets from my original InDesign file. This way the font stayed the same, and this will mean the brand will be continued between both. I continued to add images and information to it including information about the target audience and I made a page of large images which will engage the audience into the book and they will be able to appreciate the final product. I also made the first page called aims and wrote on here all the aims of the product that I had outlined in my proposal at the start. After printing it I found a couple of other errors so I went back and fixed those. Finally, this evening I have made the PowerPoint that will accompany my pitch tomorrow, it goes through inspirations, aims, improvements and things that I have learned. It also shows some of the pages in the book. Tomorrow morning I will be in early making sure everything is ready for the pitch.

I was unwell today so it meant I was late into college. Luckily my idea, of having a coffee table setup was known throughout the class and someone kindly painted my coffee table for me. I want to have a coffee table with a comfy chair and the press pack, so someone can sit down and enjoy the background. I also want to have big pictures on the wall behind to engage the passing audience. Today involved a lot of filling and tomorrow I will need to sand, as the walls are not very clean. Hopefully, they will look a lot better after this. I wanted to put the Pentax on the coffee table so the camera could be viewed while seeing the book, I may not be able to leave this here full time though as its expensive and can't really be tied down, I may just have to get it out for the pictures.

Diary

This morning began by me sorting out the images to go on the wall in my gallery space. I helped sand down the wall where some marks were. My table had then been painted with a brush that contained purple paint so I had to do another coat of white paint. While the paint was drying I began getting my photos printed on the big printer, I went with size a2 in the end as don't think the images were high resolution enough for a1. After lunch when the table was dry I put the pictures on the wall, my aim was to use the images to create an area for the audience to sit, like an outline. I originally just put the a2 images up but then decided there was a lot of blank space and that I should add the front cover of the book and also the pages page from the press pack which shows images of some of the pages. On the table, I added a mug to create the "coffee table" feel, the press pack, the book and the Pentax camera I used to create a very authentic feel for the audience. As soon as you see this it screams clean and simple and that sums up this book.
